Poster for Ophelia thinks harder show

Presented by Whitireia Stage and Screen Arts course. Ophelia gets some of Hamlet's best lines as she challenges her destiny to become the protagonist in Hamlet. In the twenty three years since Jean Betts first wrote this witty take on Shakespeare's greatest play, Ophelia Thinks Harder has become a classic, one of the most frequently performed New Zealand texts. There's a good reason for this — it's a terrific play. Combining glorious Shakespeare text with biting feminist analysis, surprising juxtapositions and wonderful comedy, Ophelia thinks very hard indeed. And in this production, harder and harder, for the play is framed by contemporary sequences through which the young women of the cast examine how much or how little has changed since the play was first written. Following on from the huge success last year of In and Out of Love, also directed by Annie Ruth, Ophelia Thinks Harder continues the wide and proven appeal that our shows have for the educational sector. And in a new twist for this iconic text, songs have been introduced as a musical counterpoint, composed by the extraordinary musician and comedienne, Hayley Sproull. It is a great opportunity for your students to hear some of Shakespeare's greatest lines while diving into a debate that is very much alive as young people deal with the complexities of on-line harassment.
